Dental Fillings-What to expect?

Post by : admin | 17 August 2023

Dental fillings are a common procedure used to treat cavities or tooth decay. Over time, tooth decay can erode part of the tooth, creating a cavity. Fillings are used to fill this cavity after the decayed material is removed. When you get a dental filling, you can expect the following:

1. Diagnosis:

  • X-rays: Before placing a filling, the dentist usually takes X-rays to assess the extent and location of the cavity.
  • Visual Examination: The dentist will use a small mirror to examine the surfaces of your teeth.

2. Preparation:

  • Local Anesthetic: To numb the area around the affected tooth, the dentist will usually administer a local anesthetic.
  • Tooth Preparation: The dentist will remove the decayed tooth material using a drill, laser, or air abrasion. They will then clean the area of bacteria and debris.

3. Filling Process:

  • Choice of Filling: Depending on the location of the filling, the extent of the repair, your allergies, and cost considerations, your dentist will choose the best filling material for you. Common materials include amalgam (silver), composite resins, porcelain, and gold.
  • Placing the Filling: The dentist will fill the cleaned-out cavity with the chosen filling material. For fillings like composites, the material is layered and then hardened using a special light.

4. Polishing:

After the filling is placed, the dentist will finish and polish the tooth.

5. Bite Check:

You’ll be asked to bite down to ensure the filling doesn’t interfere with your bite. Adjustments can be made if necessary.

6. Aftercare:

  • Sensitivity: After getting a dental filling, you may experience some tooth sensitivity, especially to cold and heat. This should decrease over time.
  • Care: Continue with good oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups. This will help prolong the life of your fillings and prevent further decay.

7. Potential Complications:

While rare, complications can arise from dental fillings:

  • Allergic reactions: Some people may be allergic to the material used, especially amalgam.
  • Tooth pain or sensitivity: This usually subsides, but if it persists, consult your dentist.
  • Deteriorating fillings: Over time, fillings can break, wear out, or fall out. Regular check-ups can help catch these issues early.

8. Costs:

The cost of dental fillings can vary depending on several factors, including:

  • The material used for the filling (e.g., composite resins tend to be more expensive than amalgam).
  • The size and location of the cavity.
  • The dentist’s fees and regional price differences.
  • Insurance coverage can also significantly affect the out-of-pocket cost.

Remember, each person’s experience might differ based on their unique dental condition, the skill of the dentist, and individual pain tolerance. If you have concerns or questions, feel free to contact us.
